IA - Internal Assessment
Group 4 Project
This is a collaborative project done early in year 2. It involves all second year physics, chemistry and biology students working together to solve an open-ended problem. The point of this activity is to model real world collaboration. There are aspects of all sciences involved in most problems. |
The framework for this project is as follows:
- The problem is presented in class in early September
- Students work individually to learn about the topic and how it would be approached by someone in their field of study - this is documented by posting findings on a page in Blackboard
- Students sign up for various aspects of the problem in small groups within their class. This group becomes the "expert group" and will represent physics in the collaborative group.
- All expert groups for the same aspect of the problem meet after school - attendance at this meeting is mandatory
- Based on decisions made by the collaborative group each expert group works to provide their part to the overall solution - this is documented in Blackboard
- Collaborative groups re-convene in early October to put the final touches on how they will present their solution at an evening symposium
- All students attend the evening symposium - attendance at this event is mandatory. This will take place in early October.
- Students complete a reflection that becomes evidence for IB of participation in this project.
Independent Research Project
This research project is usually called the "IA" for the course. You will conduct your own research about a topic that is covered in the course. This project is meant to demonstrate your skill in designing an investigation, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions based on your analysis. Your paper is graded by your classroom teacher using a rubric provided by IB. The grade accounts for 20% of your total IB Exam score.
This project is not about answering an open-ended problem. You should have an equation in mind for the relationship between your variables and this equation will play a large part in the design and analysis phases of your project. |
